The Woman's Club of San Antonio is a special group in Bexar County, Texas. It's a "civic organization," which means its members work together to help their community. This club was started on October 1, 1898.

Two important women, Mary Eleanor Brackenridge and Marin B. Fenwick, along with sixteen others, founded the club. They were inspired by a bigger group called the National Federation of Women's Clubs. Mary Eleanor Brackenridge was the very first president of the club. The Woman's Club of San Antonio is the oldest group of its kind in the city. They work with businesses, local government, and other groups to make sure people are healthy, safe, and educated.

What the Club Does

The Woman's Club of San Antonio has always worked to make a difference. They help improve health, safety, and education in their community.

Helping with Education

In 1905, the club started a scholarship called the Isabella H. Brackenridge Scholarship. This scholarship helps students go to the University of Texas Medical Branch. The club has always supported education. They give out scholarships and also talk to lawmakers about making schools better.

Supporting the Community

The club holds many events to raise money for charities in San Antonio. They also help with art and cultural programs in the community. Every year, they join other groups to celebrate Fiesta San Antonio. This is a big festival in the city.

Women's Rights

One of the club's first big goals was to help women get the right to vote. This was for the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. The Woman's Club of San Antonio was the first women's club in Texas to support this important cause.

The Club's Home

The Woman's Club of San Antonio has its main office in a historic building. It's called the David J. and May Bock Woodward House. You can find it at 1717 San Pedro Avenue in the Alta Vista area of San Antonio.

A Special House

The club bought this house in 1926 for $47,000. When they bought it, there was a rule that they had to keep the house feeling like a home. They only made small changes to create spaces for meetings and storage. The house is very important to Texas history. In 1994, it was named a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. Then, in 1996, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places listings in Bexar County, Texas. This means it's a special place recognized across the country.
