The Woman's Club of San Antonio is a special group in San Antonio, Texas. It's a "philanthropic civic organization," which means they work to help their community and make it a better place for everyone. They focus on things like health, safety, and education. This club is the oldest group of its kind in San Antonio.

How the Club Began

The Woman's Club of San Antonio started on October 1, 1898. It was founded by Mary Eleanor Brackenridge, Marin B. Fenwick, and sixteen other people. They were inspired by a bigger group called the National Federation of Women's Clubs. Mary Eleanor Brackenridge was the club's very first president.

One of the club's first big goals was to help women get the right to vote. This was for the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution. The Woman's Club of San Antonio was the first women's club in Texas to support this important cause.

What the Club Does

Since it started, the club has done many good things for the community.

Supporting Education

In 1905, the club created a special scholarship called the Isabella H. Brackenridge Scholarship. This scholarship helps students go to the University of Texas Medical Branch. The club continues to support education by giving out scholarships. They also talk to lawmakers to help make schools better for everyone.

Helping the Community

The Woman's Club of San Antonio holds many events to raise money. This money goes to different charities in San Antonio. They also support local art and cultural programs. Every year, they join other groups to help with Fiesta San Antonio. This is a big, fun celebration in the city.

Their Special Home

The club's main office is in a historic building. It's called the David J. and May Bock Woodward House. You can find it at 1717 San Pedro Avenue in the Alta Vista area of San Antonio.

The club bought this house in 1926. They paid $47,000 for it. When they bought it, they agreed to keep the house looking like a home. They only made small changes to create spaces for meetings and storage.

The Woodward House is very important. In 1994, it was named a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. This means it's a special building with a lot of history in Texas. Then, in 1996, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places listings in Bexar County, Texas. This means it's recognized as an important historical place across the whole country.
