David James O'Donoghue (born July 22, 1866 – died June 27, 1917) was an Irish writer and editor. He was known for writing about people's lives and for putting together many important books.

About David O'Donoghue

His Early Life

David James O'Donoghue was born in 1866 in Chelsea, London. His parents were from Ireland. His father, John O'Donoghue, was a bricklayer from County Cork. His mother, Bridget Griffin, was from County Tipperary.

David was the third of nine children. He had four brothers and four sisters. When he was sixteen, he started as an apprentice for an upholsterer. Later, he became a journalist and an author.

His Work as a Writer and Editor

David went to a Catholic school. He also continued to learn on his own at the British Museum. He started his writing career by writing for newspapers in Dublin. His articles were about Irish music, art, and books.

He helped start the Irish Literary Society in London. He was also a vice president of the National Literary Society in Dublin. David put together a special dictionary called The Poets of Ireland. It was first published in 1891–93 and updated in 1912. This book had information on 2,000 different authors.

David O'Donoghue also published many other books. These included:

  • Irish Poetry of the Nineteenth Century (1894)
  • Humor of Ireland (1894; a new edition came out in 1911)
  • List of 1300 Irish Artists (1894)
  • The Life and Writings of James Clarence Mangan (1897)
  • Bibliographical Catalogue of Collections of Irish Music (1899)
  • Geographical Distribution of Irish Ability (1906)

He also helped publish the works of other famous writers. He edited the writings of J. F. Lalor in 1895. He also edited William Carleton's Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry. This was a four-volume set published between 1896 and 1897.

David also edited the works of Samuel Lover (six volumes, 1898–99). He put together the prose works (1903) and poems (1904) of James Clarence Mangan. He wrote biographies about William Carleton (1896), Richard Pockrich (1899), and Robert Emmet (1902). He even helped William Carleton's sisters when they were struggling.

Later Life and Legacy

In 1896, David O'Donoghue moved to Dublin. In 1909, he became the librarian at University College Dublin. He also helped edit the Catalogue of the Gilbert Library in Dublin, which came out in 1918.

The famous poet William Butler Yeats wrote about David O'Donoghue in his book Autobiographies (1938). David O'Donoghue passed away on June 27, 1917.
