The David Lyman II House, also known as the Lyman Homestead, is a special old house in Middlefield, Connecticut. It was built around 1860. This house is one of the best examples of Gothic Revival style in the Middletown area. This means it looks a bit like old castles or churches from the Middle Ages.

Part of the house was built on the foundation of an even older house from 1785. The property, which is about 2 acres (0.8 hectares), includes the main house and other smaller buildings. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 because of its historical importance.

What Does the David Lyman II House Look Like?

The David Lyman II House is in a quiet, country part of Middlefield. It stands on the west side of Lyman Road. The house is two and a half stories tall. It is made of wood and has a pointed roof.

On top of the roof, there is a square tower called a cupola. This cupola has two round-arch windows on each side. It also has a pyramid-shaped roof that flares out. In front of the cupola, a small gabled section sticks out from the roof. This section has fancy wooden decorations called vergeboard. It also has a decorative top piece called a finial.

The front of the house has five sections. A porch runs all the way across the front. The porch is held up by posts with angled edges. These posts have decorative cut-out pieces called sawn brackets. You can also see decorative brackets under all the roof edges. These are in a style called Italianate.

Who Was David Lyman II?

The Lyman family owned land in this area for over 200 years. David Lyman II was an important person in the community. He ran a large farm that was about 500 acres (202 hectares). He was also a successful businessman. He helped start many companies, including the Airline Railroad.

The house was designed by an architect named Rufus G. Russell from New Haven, Connecticut. It was finished by 1865. The main part of the house was built on the foundation of an older house. That first house was built on the same spot in 1785.
