David Modell (born David Orrick McDearmon, Jr.; August 16, 1960 – January 13, 2017) was an important American businessman and sports leader. He was the president and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the National Football League (NFL) team, the Baltimore Ravens. As COO, he helped manage the team's daily business and operations.
Early Life and Family
David Modell was born on August 16, 1960. His mother was Patricia Breslin, an actress from the 1960s. His father was David Orrick McDearmon, Sr., who was also an actor.
When David was young, his mother married Art Modell in 1969. Art Modell owned the Cleveland Browns football team. Art Modell then adopted David and his brother, John.
David started working for the Cleveland Browns when he was only 14 years old, in 1975. He helped the team's grounds crew. Later, he worked in the ticket office and helped with public relations and marketing. He spent 25 years working with the Browns and later the Baltimore Ravens.
Leading the Baltimore Ravens
In 1996, the Cleveland Browns football team moved to Baltimore. The team was renamed the "Ravens." David Modell became the team's president. He helped with many important tasks.
He helped choose the team's new name and logo. He also worked on player contracts and made sure game days ran smoothly.
After the Ravens won Super Bowl XXXV, David's father, Art Modell, gave him more control over the team's daily operations. David continued to work with the team as a consultant even after it was sold to Steve Bisciotti in 2003.
Personal Life
David Modell lived in Baltimore with his wife, Michel. He also helped manage a company called Modell Ventures. His older brother, John, is a music producer.
David Modell passed away on January 13, 2017, from lung cancer.
