Early Life and School
David Montgomery was the only child of Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, a very important military leader in the Second World War. His mother was Elizabeth Carver. David also had two older half-brothers from his mother's first marriage.
Sadly, David's mother passed away in 1937. She became ill from an insect bite while on holiday.
David went to Winchester College starting in May 1942. His father was often away for his military duties. David later studied engineering at Trinity College, Cambridge.
Career and Public Service
After finishing school, David Montgomery started a career in business. He worked for companies like Yardley. He also built strong connections with countries in Latin America. He supported many groups that worked to improve relationships between Britain and Latin American countries. These included the Anglo-Argentine Society and Canning House.
When his father passed away in 1976, David became the 2nd Viscount Montgomery of Alamein. This meant he inherited a special title. He then became a member of the House of Lords, which is part of the British Parliament. At first, he was part of the Conservative Party.
In 1999, a new law called the House of Lords Act 1999 changed who could be in the House of Lords. David, along with most other hereditary peers (people who inherited their titles), left the House. However, he was elected back to the House of Lords in 2005. This time, he sat as a crossbencher. This means he did not belong to a specific political party.
David Montgomery received special awards for his work. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1975. Later, in 2000, he became a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG). He also received awards from many other countries, including Germany, Spain, and Mexico.
In 1994, he helped write a book about his father called The Lonely Leader: Monty 1944–45. This book also shared some details about David's own early life.

Family Life
In 1953, David Montgomery married Mary Connell. They later divorced in 1967. They had a son and a daughter together:
- His son, Henry David Montgomery, became the 3rd Viscount Montgomery of Alamein.
- His daughter was Arabella Clare Montgomery.
David later married Tessa Browning. Her mother was the famous writer Daphne du Maurier. Tessa's father, Sir Frederick Browning, was also a military leader who worked closely with David's father.
In 2014, Lord Montgomery became a patron of Freedom Flame UK. This group celebrates the lighting of a "Torch of Unity" by his father in 1948. This event happened at the D Day stone in Southsea.
David Montgomery passed away on January 8, 2020, at the age of 91.
