David Lyulph Gore Wolseley Ogilvy (born July 18, 1893) was a Scottish nobleman, a brave soldier, and someone who worked closely with the Royal Family. He was known as the 12th Earl of Airlie.

He was the oldest son of the 11th Earl of Airlie. When his father passed away in 1900, David inherited his titles at just six years old.

In 1911, he had a special role at the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary. He was one of the young men who helped carry Queen Mary's long royal train.

Later, he became a "Representative Peer" for Scotland in 1922. This meant he was chosen by other Scottish nobles to represent them in the British Parliament. He also served the government as a "lord-in-waiting" and received several important royal honors, like being made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order.

In 1936, he became the "Lord Lieutenant" of Angus, which is like a personal representative of the King or Queen in that area of Scotland. He was also a guest at the wedding of Princess Elizabeth (who later became Queen Elizabeth II) and Prince Philip in 1947. He received even more high honors, including being made a Knight of the Order of the Thistle, a very old and important Scottish order.

He was also the father-in-law of Princess Alexandra of Kent.

World War I Hero

During the First World War, he showed great bravery and reached the rank of captain. He was awarded the Military Cross for his actions, which is a medal given for "an act or acts of exemplary gallantry during active operations against the enemy on land."

Later Military Roles

He left the regular army in 1921 but continued to serve in the Territorial Army, which is a volunteer reserve force. He became a major in the Black Watch regiment. From 1924 to 1929, he was a lieutenant-colonel, leading his battalion. He was promoted to colonel in 1928.

During World War II, in 1940, he joined the Scots Guards. He later asked to return to the rank of major until 1942. He officially retired from military service in 1948. In 1943, he was in charge of the Army Cadet Forces in Scotland, helping to train young people.

In recognition of his achievements, the University of St Andrews awarded him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 1958.

Love for Horse Racing

Lord Airlie was also a keen horse racing enthusiast. He owned several racehorses.

His most famous horse was a steeplechaser named Master Robert. This horse won the prestigious Grand National race in 1924, wearing the Earl's racing colors. The Grand National is a very famous and challenging horse race held in England.

Lord Airlie passed away on December 28, 1968, at the age of 75, at his home, Airlie Castle, in Angus, Scotland.
