David Patrick was a Scottish writer and editor. He played a big part in creating encyclopedias. Encyclopedias are large books or sets of books. They contain facts and information on many different subjects.

Early Life and Education

David Patrick was born on April 19, 1849. His father was Rev. Joseph Patrick. David grew up in Ochiltree, Scotland.

He went to school at Ayr Academy. After that, he studied at the New College in Edinburgh. He planned to become a minister, like his father. He even studied theology (the study of religious faith) in other countries. He went to places like Tübingen, Berlin, Leipzig, and Göttingen. But in the end, he decided to work in literature instead.

Working on Encyclopedias

David Patrick started his career in publishing. He worked with Dr. J. M. Ross in Edinburgh. This is where he first learned about making encyclopedias.

Later, he joined the famous publishing company of William and Robert Chambers. He started as an assistant. Soon, he became the head of their literary team.

His Main Works

David Patrick edited several important books. From 1888 to 1892, he edited a new version of Chambers's Encyclopaedia. This was a huge project.

He also edited Chambers's Biographical Dictionary in 1897. This book contained information about many famous people. From 1901 to 1903, he worked on Chambers's Cyclopaedia of English Literature. He did this with F. H. Groome.

Just before he passed away in 1914, he wrote the introduction for a later edition of Chambers's Encyclopaedia.

Recognition

In 1888, David Patrick became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This is a very respected group in Scotland. It recognizes people who have done great work in science and literature.
