David Ross, Lord Ankerville (born 1727, died 1805) was an important Scottish lawyer in the 1700s. He became a Senator of the College of Justice, which was a very high position for a judge in Scotland.

About David Ross

David Ross was born in 1727. His father was David Ross, the second Laird of Inverchasley. His mother was Isabella Munro. His family's home was at Tarlogie, near Tain in Ross-shire. Their land also included an area called Glenlivet.

His Career as a Lawyer

In 1751, David Ross became an advocate. This meant he was a lawyer who could speak in higher courts. In 1756, he became the Sheriff of Kirkcudbright. A sheriff was a judge who handled local legal matters.

Later, in 1763, he became a main clerk for the Court of Session in Edinburgh. The Court of Session is Scotland's highest civil court. By 1773, he was still working as a clerk for this court. He lived in a new house on St Andrew Square in Edinburgh.

In February 1776, David Ross was chosen for a very important role. He became a Senator of the College of Justice. This made him one of Scotland's top judges. He took the place of Andrew Pringle, Lord Alemoor, who had recently passed away.

He lived at 3 St Andrew Square in Edinburgh. His neighbour was Cosmo Gordon. David Ross died at Tarlogie on August 16, 1805. After his death, William Robertson, Lord Robertson took his place as a Senator.

His Family

David Ross was married to Margaret Cochran. She was the daughter of John Cochran of Ravelrig House. Ravelrig House was located southwest of Edinburgh.

David and Margaret had four children together. Their names were Charles, David, Margaret, and Anne. Their daughter Anne married a man named John Haldane of Aberuthven.
