David Lynn Selby (born February 5, 1941) is an American actor. He has appeared in many films, TV shows, and plays. He is famous for playing Quentin Collins in the TV show Dark Shadows and Richard Channing in Falcon Crest.

Early Life and Education

David Selby was born in Morgantown, West Virginia. His father, Clyde Ira Selby, was a carpenter. David went to West Virginia University and earned degrees in theater. Later, he got a PhD from Southern Illinois University.

While at West Virginia University, David joined the cast of a play called Honey in the Rock. It was a drama about the Civil War.

Acting Career Highlights

David Selby has had a long and successful acting career. He has played many different characters over the years.

Early TV and Film Roles (1960s and 1970s)

In 1968, David Selby joined the TV series Dark Shadows. He played the ghost Quentin Collins. After the show ended in 1971, he also appeared in a movie based on the series, Night of Dark Shadows. Years later, he even returned to voice Quentin in Dark Shadows audio dramas.

In 1972, David acted with famous singer and actress Barbra Streisand in the movie Up the Sandbox. Throughout the 1970s, he appeared in several films like The Super Cops (1974) and Rich Kids (1979). He also guest-starred in popular TV shows such as The Waltons (1974) and Kojak (1976). He was part of the cast of the miniseries Washington: Behind Closed Doors (1977), which won an Emmy Award.

Starring in the 1980s

In 1980, David Selby was in the movie Raise the Titanic. This movie was not very popular with critics or audiences. He was even nominated for an award for the worst supporting actor for his role in it.

In 1981, David played a bad guy named Michael Tyrone in the TV show Flamingo Road. After that show finished, he joined the cast of Falcon Crest in 1982. He played Richard Channing, a character who was first seen as an enemy. But over time, Richard became more of a hero. By the end of the show, he was the main character.

David was nominated for six Soap Opera Digest Awards for his role as Richard Channing. He won one of these awards. He appeared in 209 episodes of Falcon Crest.

Later Career and Special Roles

David Selby continued to act in many films and TV shows in the 1990s and 2000s. Some of his movies include Dying Young (1991) and White Squall (1996). He also appeared in TV series like Cold Case (2007) and Mad Men (2009).

In 2009, David had a special role. He played Abraham Lincoln on stage at the reopening of Ford's Theatre. This was to celebrate Lincoln's 200th birthday. He even performed with Barack Obama. David had played Abraham Lincoln before, in a 1998 episode of Touched by an Angel.

In 2012, David made a cameo appearance in the movie Dark Shadows. This film was a new version of the original TV show he starred in. He was one of four actors from the old series to appear in the new movie. That same year, he also voiced Commissioner James Gordon in the animated movie Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.

More recently, in 2017, David Selby had a repeating role in the TV drama Legion.

Writing Career

Besides acting, David Selby is also a writer. He has written several plays, including Lincoln and James. He has also published poetry collections like My Mother's Autumn.

David has written novels too, such as Lincoln's Better Angel and The Blue Door. His book A Better Place is a memoir where he shares stories about his childhood. In 2010, he wrote My Shadowed Past, which talks about his experiences working on the TV show Dark Shadows.
