David Trevor Shutt, Baron Shutt of Greetland (born 16 March 1942 – died 30 October 2020) was an important British politician. He was a member of the Liberal Democrats political party.
Lord Shutt served in the House of Lords, which is part of the UK Parliament. From May 2010 to May 2012, he was the Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard. This is a special role that also made him a Deputy Chief Whip in the House of Lords. A Chief Whip helps make sure all members of their party vote together.
Early Life and Education
David Shutt was born in Farsley, a town near Leeds in England. He went to Pudsey Grammar School in Yorkshire.
Political Career
After finishing school, David Shutt trained to become an accountant. In 1975, he started working with the Rowntree trusts. These are groups that support social and political causes. He later became the Chairman of one of these trusts. He also became a Trustee for another Rowntree charity.
In 1973, he became a local politician. He was elected as a Liberal councillor for Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council. A councillor helps make decisions for a local area. Later, he represented the Liberal Democrats on this council. He even served as the Mayor of Calderdale from 1982 to 1983. The Mayor is the leader of the local council.
David Shutt tried many times to become a Member of Parliament. He ran in seven general elections between 1970 and 1992. A general election is when people vote for who they want to represent them in Parliament. He ran in areas like Sowerby and Calder Valley.
In 1993, he received an award called the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). This award recognizes people who have done great work.
On 12 May 2000, he became a life peer. This means he was given the title of Baron Shutt of Greetland. He then became a member of the House of Lords for life. The House of Lords is where Lords and Baronesses debate and vote on laws.
He spoke for the Liberal Democrats on international development issues until 2002. After the 2005 general election, he became the Chief Whip for his party in the House of Lords.
In May 2010, a new government was formed. This was the coalition government led by David Cameron. Lord Shutt was then appointed Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard. This is a ceremonial role, but it also meant he was a Deputy Chief Whip for the government in the House of Lords. He held these important roles until May 2012.
Personal Life
In 1965, David Shutt married Margaret Pemberton. They had two sons and one daughter together.
Lord Shutt passed away on 30 October 2020, when he was 78 years old.
