David Stewart (born 1357 – died around 1386) was a Scottish prince and an important noble in the 14th century. He was the oldest son of King Robert II and his second wife, Euphemia de Ross. David Stewart held important titles like the Earl of Strathearn and the Earl of Caithness.

Who Was David Stewart?

David Stewart was born in 1357. His father, Robert II, became King of Scotland in 1371. On the very day of his father's coronation, David was given the title of Earl of Strathearn. This meant he was a powerful lord who ruled over a large area of land called Strathearn. The next day, David showed his loyalty and respect to his father as the new Earl.

Royal Gifts and Titles

King Robert II gave David many important gifts and titles.

  • On June 19, 1371, David received an official document, called a charter, for the area of Urquhart. This included the famous Urquhart Castle.
  • Later, on March 21, 1375, he was given Braal Castle in a place called Caithness.
  • Between 1375 and 1377, David also became the Earl of Caithness. This made him an even more powerful figure in Scotland, ruling over two large earldoms.

Family Challenges and Disputes

David Stewart faced a big disagreement with his older half-brother, Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan. By 1385, Alexander had taken over David's castle at Urquhart. This was a serious conflict between the royal brothers.

David Stewart likely passed away in March 1386, or possibly a few years later, but no later than 1389. He was married to a daughter of Sir Alexander Lindsay of Glenesk. Together, they had one daughter named Euphemia. After David's death, his daughter Euphemia took over his title and became the Countess of Strathearn. David's widow later married Sir William Graham of Montrose.
