Early Life and Family
Alexander Lindsay was the second son of Sir David de Lindsay of Crawford. His mother was Mary Abernethy. Her father was Alexander de Abernethy. Alexander's father, David, was an important figure. He had been in charge of Edinburgh Castle and Berwick Castle. He also played a part in the Wars of Scottish Independence.
Alexander became a squire (a knight's assistant) to his cousin, Thomas Stewart, 2nd Earl of Angus. Alexander inherited land in Angus from his mother. He also gained land from his aunt, Marget Abernethy. Around 1358, he married Catherine Stirling. This marriage added even more land to his family's already large holdings. These lands were part of the Earldom of Crawford in Scotland.
