What is Modern Pentathlon?
Modern pentathlon is a really challenging sport. It combines five different events into one competition. Athletes have to be good at many things! The five events are:
- Fencing (using swords)
- Swimming (200-meter freestyle)
- Show jumping (riding a horse over obstacles)
- Pistol shooting
- Cross-country running
The shooting and running parts are often combined into one exciting event called the "laser-run." This sport tests an athlete's strength, speed, skill, and mental focus.

Working with the Czech Olympic Committee
After his successful sports career, David Svoboda became involved with the Czech Olympic Committee. He served as the chairman of their Sportsmen's Commission. This role meant he represented the views of athletes.
A Big Discussion About Athletes and the Olympics
In March 2023, David Svoboda was part of a big discussion on Czech TV. The talk was about whether athletes from Russia and Belarus should be allowed to compete in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. This was a sensitive topic because of the conflict in Ukraine.
During the interview, David shared his thoughts. His comments caused a lot of debate and strong reactions from many people. Some well-known personalities, like Dominik Hašek, criticized his statements. They felt his words supported certain viewpoints that were not helpful. Other members of the Sportsmen's Commission, like Vavřinec Hradilek and Lukáš Rohan, also said that David's opinions were his own and not those of the whole commission. Even the Czech Minister of Defence, Jana Černochová, spoke out. She invited David to an interview to show him photos of Ukrainian athletes who had been affected by the conflict.
David's Apology and Resignation
After the strong reactions, David Svoboda apologized for his statements. He publicly asked for forgiveness. However, this apology also led to more discussions, as some people who had agreed with his original comments were now critical of his apology.
David decided to step down from his role in the Sportsmen's Commission. He explained that it was difficult to be both a soldier and an athlete representative at the same time. He also received a written warning from the DUKLA Army Sports Center. This was because, as a professional soldier, he was expected to always act in a way that upholds the reputation of the armed forces.
