Who Was David Wood of Craig?
David Wood of Craig was a Scottish courtier and administrator. He worked for James V of Scotland, the King of Scotland. First, he was in charge of the King's food and supplies as the "Master of the King's Larder."
David Wood's Important Role
From 1538 to 1543, David Wood got a big promotion. He became the Comptroller of Scotland. This meant he was in charge of all the country's money and how it was spent.
Before David Wood took over, the King was not happy with how things were being managed. In November 1538, an English official named Thomas Wharton heard some news. He heard that a secretary named Adam Otterburn was put in prison at Dumbarton Castle. Another person, James Colville, who used to be the Comptroller, was also in prison because of problems with his accounts.
What David Wood Said About Spending
In 1543, David Wood spoke about how Regent Arran was spending money. Regent Arran was ruling Scotland while the new Queen, Mary, was very young. Wood said that Regent Arran was spending much more money on his own household than King James V had spent when he was alive. He noted that Arran "holds a great house and is at more costly expense than our late sovereign lord held in his time."
