Davy's centaury (Centaurium davyi) is a pretty flowering plant. It belongs to the gentian family.

Where Davy's Centaury Lives

Davy's centaury is a special plant because it is endemic to California. This means it grows naturally only in California. You can find it along the coast near the San Francisco Bay Area. It also grows in areas north of there. Another place it lives is on Santa Cruz Island. This island is part of the Channel Islands.

This plant likes to grow in damp places. It lives in coastal sage scrub areas. These are often found on bluffs and sand dunes. You might also see it in woodlands near the coast.

What Davy's Centaury Looks Like

Davy's centaury is an annual herb. This means it lives for only one growing season. It usually grows to be about 25 centimeters tall. That's about the length of a standard ruler. Its leaves are oval-shaped. They are usually less than 2 centimeters long.

The flowers grow in a small, open cluster. Some of the flowers have very short stems, called pedicels. Each flower typically has five petals. These petals overlap each other. They are only a few millimeters long. The flowers are usually pink or partly pink.
