Davy Carton's Early Life and Music Journey
Davy Carton was born in Islington, London. His family moved to Tuam, Ireland, in 1966 when he was young. As a teenager, he went to Tuam CBS. There, he formed a punk band called Blaze X. He played with his schoolmates Paul Cunniffe, Paul Ralph, and Ja Keating.
After finishing school, Davy started working in a local factory that made clothes. He kept playing music with Blaze X until the band broke up in 1981. That same year, Davy married his girlfriend, Trisha.
During the 1980s, Ireland faced tough economic times. Davy worked full-time at the textile factory. He mostly put his music career on hold to support his wife and their three young sons.
Starting The Saw Doctors Band
In the late 1980s, Davy Carton met up with Leo Moran. Leo used to be in an Irish reggae band. Davy and Leo started playing music together in Galway. They performed their own rock songs that had a traditional Irish feel.
The duo decided to call themselves The Saw Doctors. This name came from old Irish travelers who sharpened saws for a living. They planned to find a better name later, but the band became popular so quickly that they never did!
In 1989, The Saw Doctors became very well-known. Davy finally left his factory job to focus on music. The band began touring with famous groups like The Waterboys, The Hothouse Flowers, and The Stunning.
Achievements with The Saw Doctors
With The Saw Doctors, Davy Carton has achieved a lot. They have released six studio albums and two live albums. They also have a concert DVD and several collections of their best songs. The band has toured widely across Europe and the United States.
Davy is known for his clever and lively song lyrics. He has helped write almost all of the band's songs. This includes "I Useta Lover", which became the best-selling single of all time in Ireland.
The Saw Doctors' songs usually do not talk about politics. Davy explained in 2003 that he is not a politician. He prefers to make people sing along and have fun. He would rather write about relationships and football than tell people how to vote. He believes in writing about things they truly understand.
