Davy Carton, born on April 10, 1959, is a talented singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Tuam, Ireland. He is most famous for being a main member of The Saw Doctors, a folk-rock band he helped start with his friend Leo Moran in 1987.

Early Life and Music Beginnings

Davy Carton was born in Islington, London. In 1966, when he was seven years old, his family moved to Tuam, a town in County Galway, Ireland.

Forming a Punk Band

As a teenager, Davy went to Tuam CBS school. There, he formed a punk rock band called Blaze X. He played with his friends Paul Cunniffe, Paul Ralph, and Ja Keating.

Life After School

After finishing school, Davy started working in a local textile factory. He continued to play music with Blaze X until the band stopped playing together in 1981. That same year, Davy married his girlfriend, Trisha.

The Saw Doctors: A New Chapter

During the 1980s, Ireland faced tough economic times. Davy worked full-time at the textile factory to support his wife and three young sons. This meant he had to put his music career on hold for a while.

Meeting Leo Moran

In the late 1980s, Davy met up with Leo Moran. Leo had been in an Irish reggae band called Too Much for the White Man. Davy and Leo started playing music together around Galway. They performed their own rock songs that had a traditional, "rootsy" feel.

Choosing a Band Name

The duo decided to call themselves The Saw Doctors. This name came from old Ireland, where travelers would sharpen saws to earn money. They planned to find a better name later, but the band became popular so quickly that they never changed it!

Becoming Full-Time Musicians

The Saw Doctors started to become very well-known. They even toured with famous bands like The Waterboys, The Hothouse Flowers, and The Stunning. Because of this success, Davy was able to leave his factory job in 1989 and become a full-time musician.

Achievements with The Saw Doctors

Davy Carton has achieved a lot with The Saw Doctors. They have released six studio albums and two live albums. They also have a concert DVD and several collection albums. The band has toured extensively across Europe and the United States.

Songwriting and Lyrics

Davy is known for his clever and lively lyrics. He has helped write almost all of the band's songs. One of their most famous songs is "I Useta Lover", which became Ireland's best-selling single of all time.

Focus of Their Music

The Saw Doctors' songs usually avoid political topics. Davy once explained in an interview that he is not a politician. He prefers to make people sing along and have fun. He would rather sing about everyday things like relationships and sports. The band likes to write about things they truly understand, like the feelings of being turned down by someone you like.
