The Day-Taylor House is a really old and special house in Hartford, Connecticut. It's located at 81 Wethersfield Avenue. This house was built way back in 1857. It's famous for being one of the best examples of a style called "Italianate villa" architecture made from brick. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Today, it's not a home anymore, but it's used for offices.

What Does the House Look Like?

The Day-Taylor House is in a neighborhood called Sheldon-Charter Oak in Hartford. It stands across the street from the Armsmear estate, which belonged to Samuel Colt. The house is made of red brick and has two and a half stories. It's shaped a bit like the letter "L".

Cool Architectural Features

The house has a special roof called a "hip roof." It also has a tall, three-story tower that rises from where the "L" shape bends. Both the main roof and the tower roof have wide edges that stick out. These edges are supported by strong, evenly spaced brackets.

Many windows on the first two floors are in pairs. They are usually rectangular with decorative "hoods" above them. Some windows are shaped like round arches. You might also spot some original balconies made of cast iron! The attic floor has smaller windows in different shapes. One round-arch window is right in the middle of the front of the house. A porch with fancy Corinthian columns wraps around the bottom of the tower. Inside, the house doesn't have much of its original design left.

Who Built and Lived Here?

The Day-Taylor House was built in 1857. The builder was a man named Hirim Bushnell. He was quite famous! Hirim Bushnell also built the Connecticut State Capitol building. He even built the Memorial Arch in Bushnell Park.

Important Owners

The house was built for Albert F. Day. He was a well-known merchant in the area. His father was even a Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut, which is a very important political job in the state. We don't know for sure who designed the house. However, it looks a bit like buildings designed by Henry Austin. He was an architect from New Haven who loved the Italianate villa style.
