Day Deborah Rica Lipford, known today as Dr. Day Gardner, is an important American figure who has achieved many things. She was once Miss Atlantic City in 1974. Later, she became Miss Delaware in 1976. She made history by being the first African American contestant to reach the top ten at the Miss America 1977 pageant.
She grew up in Elwood, a part of Mullica Township, New Jersey. She finished high school at Oakcrest High School in Hamilton Township, Atlantic County, New Jersey in 1973.

Day Gardner has worked in many interesting fields.
Design and Media
She was the President and Director of Lipford Corporation. One of her biggest projects was designing the inside of the SandCastle Entertainment Complex. This was a large dinner theater and nightclub in Guam, costing $40 million.
Gardner also worked in media. She was a media consultant for KUAM Broadcasting in Guam. When she returned to the U.S., she worked as an on-air personality and producer for African Broadcasting at the World Trade Center in New York City.
Public Service and Advocacy
She was the National Director of Black Americans for Life in Washington, D.C.. This group is part of the National Right to Life Committee.
In 2017, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan suggested she join the Maryland Board of Physicians. This board helps oversee doctors in Maryland. However, her nomination was later withdrawn. This happened because some people criticized her strong views on certain medical issues.

Day Gardner also hosted online and radio shows. She was the anchor for 'Daily Life News with Day Gardner' on NPLR.net. Later, she hosted 'The Day Report' for American Family Radio.

In January 2011, Day Gardner earned a Doctorate Degree from the Faith Evangelical College and Seminary in Tacoma, Washington.
