Daybreak (1983 TV series) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Daybreak was a short morning news show in the United Kingdom. It was shown on a TV channel called TV-am, which used to broadcast breakfast television. The show focused on news stories and started on February 1, 1983, when TV-am first launched.

What Was Daybreak?

Daybreak began as an hour-long news program. It aired every weekday morning from 6:00 AM to 7:00 AM. The main goal of the show was to deliver important news to viewers early in the day.

The first presenters of Daybreak were Robert Kee and Angela Rippon. They took turns hosting the show, bringing the latest news to the audience.

Why Did Daybreak Change?

After TV-am started, not many people watched it. Because of low viewing figures, the channel made some big changes very quickly.

Daybreak was one of the first shows to be affected. On February 28, 1983, just a few weeks after it began, the show was cut in half. It became only 30 minutes long. The original presenters, Robert Kee and Angela Rippon, were replaced. Gavin Scot became the new weekday presenter, and Lynda Barry hosted on weekends.

The End of Daybreak

The show was cut even shorter later on, lasting only 15 minutes. It also moved to a new studio that used a green screen for backgrounds.

However, these changes didn't help. Daybreak was eventually cancelled on Monday, May 23, 1983. This meant the show only ran for a little over three months.

Daybreak's Name Lives On

The name "Daybreak" was used again many years later. In 2010, a new morning show on ITV (another UK channel) was launched. This new show was also called Daybreak and replaced an older program called GMTV. The 2010 version of Daybreak lasted for four years.
