Daybreak was a TV show in Britain that aired every morning on ITV. It was a "breakfast television" program, meaning it was on early in the day. The show ran from 6 September 2010 to 25 April 2014.
Daybreak took over from another popular morning show called GMTV. GMTV had its last weekday episode on 3 September 2010. Just three days later, Daybreak began. In March 2014, ITV announced that Daybreak would finish. It was replaced by a new show called Good Morning Britain, which started on 28 April 2014.
History of Daybreak
How Daybreak Started
ITV decided to replace GMTV with Daybreak after ITV took full control of the company that made GMTV. Daybreak and another show called Lorraine were the main weekday morning programs on ITV Breakfast. On weekends, children's shows were broadcast during this time.
Before Daybreak started, ITV ran a big advertising campaign. They showed short ads between programs on ITV to promote the new show.
First Episode of Daybreak
The very first episode of Daybreak aired on 6 September 2010. The original hosts, Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley, introduced viewers to the new TV set. They also showed off the view from the studio window.
The first show included an interview with Tony Blair, who used to be the Prime Minister. The main news story was about the collapse of the Farepak Christmas savings club. This had happened in 2006. The show also featured views of different places around the UK. Plus, viewers got a tour of the new studio. Newspapers had mixed opinions about the first episode.
Changes Behind the Scenes
In March 2011, ITV announced some big changes. They decided to make Daybreak part of their ITV News operations. This was a change in how the show was managed.
Later that year, in July, it was announced that ITV Studios would take over making Daybreak. They also took over making its sister show, Lorraine. In August, Karl Newton, who worked on This Morning, was put in charge of this change. He wanted to refresh Daybreak to try and improve its audience numbers.
On 2 September, ITV announced that David Kermode would become the new editor of Daybreak. He used to be the chief of BBC Breakfast. This change meant there would be big updates to the presenters and the show's style. On 6 September, Daybreak celebrated its first year on air.
Daybreak Gets a New Look
In December 2011, news reports said that Daybreak would focus on "busy mums" as part of its new plan. A new team of presenters was expected to start in April 2012, but these plans were delayed.
On 19 November 2011, it was reported that the original presenters, Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley, would be leaving. They left on 5 December. Dan Lobb and Kate Garraway took over for a short time until new presenters were announced.
On 4 May 2012, ITV confirmed that Aled Jones and Lorraine Kelly would be the new main presenters. Aled Jones said he was excited to work with Lorraine Kelly. Later, Ranvir Singh and Matt Barbet also joined the team. Ranvir Singh would present the first hour of the show. Laura Tobin, a weather presenter from the BBC, also joined. Kate Garraway would present on Fridays and fill in for Lorraine Kelly.
On 28 August, the new Daybreak logo was shown. The updated show started on 3 September. Viewers had mixed reactions to the new look. Some thought the new set was "old fashioned," while others liked the change. They felt it was a step back to the original style of GMTV, which many viewers wanted. Even with the changes, the first new-look Daybreak only had 600,000 viewers. However, over time, the show's audience grew to around 700,000 viewers.
On 15 February 2014, Lorraine Kelly announced she would leave Daybreak later that year. She signed a new contract to present Lorraine every weekday. On 25 April, Daybreak officially ended. Aled Jones and Kate Garraway hosted the final episode.
