Lorraine Kelly (born 30 November 1959) is a famous television presenter from Scotland. She is best known for hosting morning TV shows on ITV and STV.

For many years, she has presented shows like Good Morning Britain, GMTV, and her own popular show, Lorraine.

Lorraine has received special honours for her work in television and for helping charities. She was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2012. Later, in 2020, she was promoted to a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).

Early Life and First Jobs

Lorraine Kelly was born in Glasgow, Scotland. Her family has Irish roots. Her father, John, was a television repairman. When she was a teenager, her family moved to East Kilbride, where she went to Claremont High School.

After school, she decided not to go to university. Instead, she started working for her local newspaper, the East Kilbride News. In 1983, she got a job as a researcher at BBC Scotland. A year later, she began reporting on Scottish news for the morning show TV-am.

Television Career

Starting on Morning TV

In 1984, Lorraine became the Scotland Correspondent for the TV show TV-am. She became well-known for her reporting on the Pan Am Flight 103 disaster in Lockerbie. Because of her great work, she started presenting TV-am’s Sunday program in 1989.

By 1990, she was one of the main presenters of Good Morning Britain, a very popular morning show at the time.

In 1993, Lorraine helped launch a new breakfast show called GMTV. She hosted many different segments on the show. She eventually got her own segment called Lorraine Live, which became very popular. The show's name later changed to LK Today and then GMTV with Lorraine.

In 2010, GMTV was replaced by a new show called Daybreak. At the same time, Lorraine started hosting her very own show, called Lorraine, which still airs today. For a couple of years, from 2012 to 2014, she also co-hosted Daybreak with Aled Jones.

Besides her own show, Lorraine has appeared on many other programs. She has narrated the CBeebies show Raa Raa the Noisy Lion and presented a show about penguins for Channel 5.

She has also made fun cameo appearances in TV series like Birds of a Feather and Coronation Street. In 2018, she co-hosted a game show on BBC One called Wedding Day Winners.

In 2024, she surprised audiences by appearing as "Owl" on the popular singing competition The Masked Singer. She has also been a guest on shows like Have I Got News for You and RuPaul's Drag Race UK.

Charity Work

Lorraine is known for her work with many charities. She is a patron for Worldwide Cancer Research and Help for Heroes, which supports soldiers. She also supports POhWER, a charity that helps people stand up for their rights.

In 2011, she took part in the BT Red Nose Desert Trek for Comic Relief. She and other celebrities walked across a desert in Kenya and raised over £1.3 million. She is also a big supporter of the STV Children's Appeal in Scotland.

Lorraine has received many awards for her work. In 2012, she was awarded an OBE, and in 2020, a CBE, for her services to broadcasting and charity. These are special honours given by the King or Queen.

In 2014, she received a special Scottish BAFTA award to celebrate her 30 years in television. She received another special BAFTA award in 2024.

From 2004 to 2007, she served as the Rector of the University of Dundee. The university later gave her an honorary degree for her charity work. She is also an Honorary Colonel in the Army Cadet Force.

Personal Life

Lorraine married television cameraman Steve Smith in 1992. They have one daughter, Rosie, who was born in 1994. In 2024, Lorraine became a grandmother.

The family has lived in different parts of the UK, including Berkshire and Scotland. Lorraine considers Dundee her "adopted" home, even though she now lives closer to London for work.

She is a big fan of the Scottish football team Dundee United.

In addition to her TV work, Lorraine writes weekly columns for The Sun newspaper and The Sunday Post.
