Dayton is a small place in Henry County, Illinois, United States. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it is a settlement that does not have its own local government. Instead, it is part of a larger area called Colona Township.
A Look Back: Dayton's History
Dayton is one of the oldest settlements in Henry County. It was officially "laid out," or planned, in October 1836. This means people decided where streets and buildings would go.
In the past, Dayton was an important stop. It was on the Chicago, Dixon and Rock Island stage route. A stage route was like an old-fashioned bus line. Horse-drawn carriages, called stagecoaches, would carry people and mail between towns.
The community probably got its name from Dayton, Ohio. It was common for new towns to be named after older, established places.
Where is Dayton?
Dayton is located in the northwest part of Henry County. You can find it just south of another small community called Cleveland.
