Dayton Moore (born February 17, 1967) is an American professional baseball executive. He currently works as a senior advisor for the Texas Rangers in Major League Baseball (MLB). Moore is famous for leading the Kansas City Royals as their general manager. Under his leadership, the Royals won the World Series in 2015. He also helped the Atlanta Braves win the World Series in 1995 and the Texas Rangers win in 2023.

Moore started his baseball career as a coach at George Mason University. He then joined the Atlanta Braves and worked in their scouting and baseball operations departments. In 2006, he became the general manager for the Kansas City Royals. He stayed with the Royals until 2022, when he moved to the Texas Rangers.

Early Life and Education

Dayton Moore was born on February 17, 1967, in Wichita, Kansas. He grew up playing American Legion Baseball in Moline, Illinois. His Moline team even reached the state tournament finals. As a child, Moore was a big fan of the Kansas City Royals.

He played baseball at Garden City Community College. Later, he graduated from George Mason University in 1989. He earned a degree in Physical Education and Health. Moore continued his studies at George Mason, getting a master's degree in Athletic Administration in 1992. He also coached baseball at the university from 1990 to 1994. During the summers of 1992 and 1993, he managed the Winchester Royals in the Valley Baseball League.

Baseball Career Highlights

Moore joined Major League Baseball in 1994. He started as a scout for the Atlanta Braves. He moved up through different roles, including assistant director of scouting and director of international scouting. In 2002, he became the director of player personnel development. By August 2005, he was the Braves' assistant general manager.

Leading the Kansas City Royals

On June 8, 2006, the Kansas City Royals hired Moore as their new general manager. His contract was extended several times, showing the team's trust in him. In 2010, Moore made a big trade. He sent pitcher Zack Greinke to the Milwaukee Brewers. In return, the Royals got players like Alcides Escobar and Lorenzo Cain. This trade was very important for the Royals' future success.

The Royals had a great season in 2013, their best since 1994. They continued this success by reaching the World Series in both 2014 and 2015. They won the World Series in 2015! Many people believe Moore's trades, especially the Greinke trade, built the team that achieved this success. After the 2015 season, Moore received the Best Executive Award.

Another important trade by Moore happened in 2012. He traded Wil Myers to the Tampa Bay Rays. In return, the Royals got James Shields and Wade Davis. These players were key parts of the Royals' World Series teams.

Later Roles and Current Position

After the Royals' World Series win, Moore signed another contract extension. In late 2019, John Sherman bought the Royals team. He decided to keep Moore as general manager. In September 2021, Moore was promoted to president of baseball operations. J. J. Picollo became the new general manager. However, in September 2022, Moore was fired by the Royals.

On November 23, 2022, Moore joined the Texas Rangers. He now serves as their senior advisor of baseball operations. The Rangers won the World Series in 2023, adding another championship to Moore's career.

Personal Life

Dayton Moore is a Christian and often talks about his beliefs. He lives in Leawood, Kansas, with his wife and three children. His son, Robert, played college baseball for the University of Arkansas. Robert was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2022 Major League Baseball draft.

Moore has also written a book called "More Than a Season." The book shares his experiences with the Royals' journey to the 2014 World Series. He also started an organization called "C" You in the Major Leagues.
