DeNoon, Arizona facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

DeNoon was once a small, bustling place known as a ghost town today. It was located about 13 miles southwest of Superior in Pinal County, Arizona, United States.

What Was DeNoon?

DeNoon was a special kind of town called a "milling town." This means it was built to support a nearby mine. The town helped process the ore (rock with valuable minerals) that came from the Reymert Mine, which was only about 2 miles away.

Who Founded DeNoon?

The town of DeNoon was founded and named in 1889 by a person named James DeNoon Reymert. He likely named the town after himself, connecting it to his family name.

Why Did DeNoon Disappear?

DeNoon grew quite quickly after it was founded. It even had its own post office, which opened on March 19, 1890. However, the town's success was short-lived. The post office closed just one year later, in 1891. After the post office shut down, the town of DeNoon soon disappeared, becoming a ghost town. This often happened to mining towns when the mine ran out of ore or became too expensive to operate.
