How the De Croo Government Was Formed
The De Croo Government was created on 1 October 2020. This was 494 days after the 2019 Belgian federal election in May 2019. Forming a new government in Belgium can often take a long time.
Replacing the Previous Government
This new government took over from the Wilmès II Government. The Wilmès II Government was a temporary one. It was set up to help Belgium deal with the coronavirus outbreak.
What is a Vivaldi Coalition?
The De Croo Government is known as a "Vivaldi coalition." This name comes from the famous composer Antonio Vivaldi. He wrote a well-known piece called The Four Seasons.
The "Four Seasons" name fits because this government includes four different types of political parties:
- Liberals: Open Vld and MR
- Socialists: Vooruit and PS
- Greens: Groen and Ecolo
- Christian Democrats: CD&V
Who is in the Opposition?
Not all political parties are part of the government. Some parties form the "opposition." They do not support the government's plans.
In the De Croo Government, the two largest parties in Flanders are in the opposition. These are N-VA and Vlaams Belang. Other opposition parties include cdH, DéFI, and PVDA-PTB.
Who Are the Ministers?
The Belgian Constitution says there must be an equal number of Dutch-speaking and French-speaking ministers. This is true for all ministers except the Prime Minister. Because many parties joined the government, the number of ministers grew.
More Ministers in the Government
The De Croo Government has 14 ministers. It also has 5 extra Secretaries of State. This means there are 7 more members than in the previous Wilmès II Government.
Familiar and New Faces
Many parties chose new people for their minister roles. However, some ministers from the previous government stayed.
- Alexander De Croo: He was a minister before and is now the Prime Minister.
- Sophie Wilmès: She was the previous Prime Minister. Now she is the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
- David Clarinval: He moved to a new role. He is now the Minister for the Middle Class, Small Businesses, and Agriculture.
- Frank Vandenbroucke: He returned to politics after nine years. He is now the Minister of Health and Social Affairs. He held many important jobs before, like Minister of Foreign Affairs.
