De Hoop is a special kind of windmill called a gristmill located in Oud-Zevenaar, Netherlands. A gristmill is used to grind grain into flour or animal feed. This historic mill was owned by the Pijnappel family for a very long time, from 1852 until 2014. After that, it was sold to the Botter family, and the person who runs the mill today is Frits Botter.

The Story of De Hoop Mill

How the Mill Was Built

The De Hoop windmill was built in 1850 by a person named HB Meyer. He worked on it to create a strong and useful mill. However, just two years later, in 1852, the mill was sold to the Pijnappel family. This family became very important to the mill's history.

A Family Business

The Pijnappel family was well-known for owning windmills. Besides De Hoop, they also had other mills in nearby towns like Babberich, Ooy, Duiven, Pannerden, Klarenbeek, and Posterenk. This shows they were very involved in the milling business!

In the Netherlands, it was common for a mill business to be more than just the mill itself. Often, it included a bakery right next to the mill and even a farm. This meant the mill could grind grain, the bakery could use the flour, and the farm could grow the crops. It was a complete system!

What the Mill Ground

When the Pijnappel family first owned De Hoop, the mill was mainly used to process animal feed. This means it would grind grains into food for farm animals. But over time, under the ownership of Jan Pijnappel, the mill's purpose changed. It started to process cereals for people to eat, turning grains into flour for bread and other foods.

New Owners for a New Era

The Pijnappel family owned De Hoop for over 160 years! But in 2014, Jan Pijnappel sold the mill to Frits Botter. This marked a new chapter for De Hoop, continuing its long tradition of grinding grain for the community.
