Helping the Community
De Renzie Brett was very active in his new home. From 1870 to 1874, he was a representative for the Selwyn area on the 6th Canterbury Provincial Council. This council was like a local government for the Canterbury region, helping to make decisions about the area.
He also became a member of the New Zealand Legislative Council on 3 July 1871. This was a big role, as he helped create laws for the whole country. He continued to serve in this important position until he passed away on 16 June 1889 in Christchurch.
Bringing Water to Canterbury
One of the most important things De Renzie Brett did was bring irrigation to inland Canterbury. Irrigation is a way of supplying water to dry land, which helps crops grow much better. This was a huge help for farmers in the area.
He named his own farm Kirwee, and over time, a small town grew up around it. This town is still called Kirwee today!
De Renzie Brett is buried at Linwood Cemetery in Christchurch.
