De Soto is a small community in Clarke County, Mississippi, United States. It is known as a census-designated place, which means it's an area the government counts for population. However, it doesn't have its own city government.

De Soto was first officially counted as a census-designated place in the 2020 United States census. At that time, its population was 274 people.

History of De Soto

De Soto got its name from Hernando de Soto, a famous explorer. It was one of the first important towns in Clarke County. This was before the American Civil War, a major war in U.S. history.

The town was built along the Chickasawhay River. People started building houses in De Soto as early as 1845. By 1858, churches were being built there too.

In 1900, De Soto had a Post Office and two churches. The population was 258 people back then. The post office served the community for many years, from 1856 until 1978.

At one point, De Soto was a busy place with several businesses. It had two sawmills, which cut wood. There was also a drug store, a hotel, and a blacksmith. Many general stores served the community's needs.
