John "Deacon John" Moore is a famous American musician, singer, and actor. He was born on June 23, 1941. People know him for his amazing blues, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll music. One of his band members gave him the nickname "Deacon."

John Moore grew up in the vibrant city of New Orleans, Louisiana. He is a talented guitar player. His sister, Sybil Kein, is a well-known scholar of Creole culture. John Moore has been a Catholic since he was a baby. His daughter, Lisa C. Moore, is a publisher.
Early Music Career in New Orleans
Deacon John started playing music in New Orleans when he was a teenager. This was in the 1950s. He became a "session musician," which means he played guitar on many hit songs for other artists. Some of these famous musicians included Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas, Lee Dorsey, and Ernie K-Doe.
His own band, The Ivories, played at a famous New Orleans club called the Dew Drop Inn. They were very popular! Sometimes, they even got more attention than the national stars they were opening for. Even though he was loved by local fans and other musicians, Deacon John didn't have many hit songs under his own name. This kept him from becoming famous across the country like some of his friends.
Awards and Recognition
Deacon John Moore has received many honors for his music. In 2000, he was welcomed into the Louisiana Blues Hall of Fame. This is a special place for musicians who have made a big impact on blues music in Louisiana.
He was also featured in a documentary called Going Back to New Orleans: The Deacon John Film. There's also a concert CD called Deacon John's Jump Blues, released in 2003.
As of 2024, Deacon John is still a favorite musician in New Orleans. On July 25, 2006, he became the president of the local musicians' union, the American Federation of Musicians.
Family and Tributes
Deacon John's son, Keith, was also a talented artist. Keith was known in New Orleans for his unique "ambient noise" music and was part of a punk band called Manchild. He also helped start an experimental music event called Noizefest in 2005. This event was a modern alternative to the famous Jazzfest.
In January 2008, Deacon John had the honor of performing at the inauguration of Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal. He sang "God Bless America" with the 156th Army Band. Later that year, he was inducted into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. This happened during a special ceremony at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts.
Deacon John's Acting Roles
Besides music, Deacon John Moore has also acted in movies and TV shows. His first acting role was in 1987 in a horror film called Angel Heart. He didn't appear on the big screen again until 2013.
