The Deadose were a Native American tribe who lived in what is now Texas a long time ago, in the early 1700s. They were close friends with other tribes like the Jumano, Yojuane, and Bidai. They lived near the Brazos River in eastern Texas, in a large area known as the Rancheria Grande.

Who Were the Deadose?

The Deadose were part of a group of tribes living in the Rancheria Grande, a big area along the Brazos River. This region was home to many different Native American groups. The Deadose were especially connected to the Jumano, Yojuane, and Bidai people.

Moving to the Missions

In the 1740s, like many other tribes from the Rancheria Grande, the Deadose moved closer to the Spanish missions built along the San Gabriel River. These missions were set up by Franciscan missionaries, who were priests from Spain. The Deadose, along with the Yojuane, Mayeye, and Bidai, were among the tribes who actually asked the missionaries to come and build these missions for them.

However, not all Deadose people stayed at the missions. Many, along with their friends from the Bidai and Akokisa tribes, mostly visited the mission areas to trade with the Spanish soldiers. They had also built strong trade connections that reached all the way to the French people living in Louisiana.

Alliances and Trade

In 1750, the Deadose joined a big alliance with many other tribes. This group included the Bidai, Akokisa, Ais, Hasinai, Kadohadachos, Nabedaches, Yojuanes, Tawakonis, Yatasis, Kichais, Naconis, and Tonkawas. Together, they left Mission San Ildefonso to attack the Apache tribe. The Deadose did not return to the mission until 1752.

Life at the Mission

When the Deadose did spend time at the mission, they often married people from the Akokisa and Bidai tribes. This helped to create strong family ties and connections between these different groups.
