The San Gabriel River is a cool river that flows through central Texas. It starts where two smaller rivers meet: the North Fork San Gabriel and the South Fork San Gabriel. Both of these start in Burnet County. This meeting point is in Georgetown, Texas.
The river has two big man-made lakes. These are Lake Georgetown on the North Fork and Granger Lake. Granger Lake is about 25 miles (40 km) downstream from where the two forks join. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built both of these lakes. The San Gabriel River eventually joins the Little River. This happens five miles south of Cameron. The Little River then flows into the Brazos River near College Station.
In Georgetown, there's a city park right where the North and South Forks meet. It has a popular swimming spot called the "Blue Hole." This fun area is just a bit upstream on the South Fork.

Discover the San Gabriel River
The San Gabriel River flows through two different types of land. West of the Balcones Fault, it's like many rivers in the Texas Hill Country. Here, you'll find rocky river bottoms made of limestone. There are also some small rapids and mini-canyons. In slower parts, the river bottom can be muddy.
East of the Balcones Fault, the river enters the Blackland Prairie. Here, the land is flatter and has deep clay soils. These areas are great for farms and green pastures.
Fun Things to Do on the River
The San Gabriel River is a great place for outdoor fun! You can go canoeing or kayaking on its waters. It's also a popular spot for fishing.
Many types of fish live in the river. You might catch:

- Largemouth bass
- Sunfish
- Carp
- Longnose gar
- Various kinds of bait fish
The lakes along the river, like Lake Georgetown and Granger Lake, also have many game fish. These include some species that were brought in from other places.
Music and Events by the River
The river also flows past the Apache Pass Amphitheater and Festival Grounds. This cool spot is near Thorndale. It's south of the town of San Gabriel. Apache Pass has a special stage that hangs out over the river. It's used for big concerts and other exciting events.
