Deadwood is a ghost town located in Trinity County, California. A ghost town is a place where most people have left, often because the main reason for the town's existence, like a mine, closed down.
Why it's Called Deadwood
Deadwood got its name because of the many dead trees in the forests nearby. It was like a forest of "dead wood" all around the town.
A Look Back: Deadwood's History
Deadwood began as a small settlement around the year 1851. It was a lively place for many years. The town had its own post office, which was open from 1881 until 1915.
An important part of Deadwood's history was the Brown Bear Mine. This mine was started in 1880 and brought many people to the area looking for gold and other valuable minerals. However, like many mining towns, when the resources ran out or became too hard to get, people started to leave. The closing of the post office in 1915 marked the end of Deadwood as an active town.
