Death of Eric Garner facts for kids
Eric Garner (born September 15, 1970 – died July 17, 2014) was a man who lived in Staten Island, New York City. He passed away in Staten Island after a police officer held him in a neck restraint for about 15 seconds. Doctors later said that this neck restraint was a reason for his death.
Officers from the New York City Police Department approached Eric Garner. They believed he was selling single cigarettes without a license. When Officer Daniel Pantaleo tried to arrest Mr. Garner, Mr. Garner moved his arms away. Officer Pantaleo then put his arm around Mr. Garner's neck and brought him to the ground. After this, Mr. Garner said "I can't breathe" many times.
The Aftermath
On December 3, 2014, a group of citizens called a grand jury decided not to bring official charges against Officer Pantaleo. This decision led to many protests and gatherings. People were upset and spoke out against how police sometimes use too much force.
By the end of December 2014, more than 50 protests had taken place across the United States. These events showed how many people cared about what happened to Eric Garner.
