Deborah Judith Vietor-Engländer, born in 1946, is a British expert in literature. She studies and writes about books and authors.

Her Life Story

Deborah Vietor-Engländer was born in London, England. Her father had to leave Prague in 1939 and found safety in Great Britain. Her sister was one of the children rescued by Nicholas Winton on a special train to London in 1939.

Deborah studied German and French at University College London. After her studies, she worked as a writer for the BBC German Service. She also taught at the Polytechnic of Central London. Later, she wrote her doctoral paper about a famous play called Faust.

From 1972 to 1992, she taught at the Saarland University. Then, she taught at the Technische Universität Darmstadt until 2007. She is married and has one daughter.

Her Work and Books

Deborah Vietor-Engländer has written many books and articles. A lot of her work focuses on people who had to leave their homes (this is called exile). She also writes about the Shoah, which was a very difficult and sad time in history.

She has studied many important writers. These include Lion Feuchtwanger, Heinrich Mann, Friedrich Torberg, Hermynia Zur Mühlen, and Arnold Zweig.

Deborah has also edited many books. She helped put together The Legacy of Exile in 1998. She also worked on the Jewish Library and Exile Documents series. She edited volumes like Sucher und Selige (2009) and Das war meine Zeit (2013). These were part of a collection of works by Alfred Kerr. In 2013, she finished editing a three-volume set of works by Hermann Sinsheimer.

In 2016, she published a big book about Alfred Kerr. It was 720 pages long! In 2021, she also edited four volumes of Alfred Kerr's letters from Berlin.

Leadership Roles

Deborah Vietor-Engländer has held important positions in different groups. From 1991 to 1996, she was the Vice-Chairman of the International Arnold Zweig Society. She then became its Chairman until 2002.

Since May 2017, she has been the President of the Alfred Kerr Foundation. This group helps to keep Alfred Kerr's work and ideas alive. Since 2020, she has been on the board of directors for the P.E.N. Centre of German-Speaking Writers Abroad. This organization supports writers who live outside their home country.
