The Decatur Heights Historic District is a unique neighborhood in Cumberland, Maryland. It is found on the northeast side of the city. This area is special because it has many old buildings. These buildings help us understand the past. There are 377 historic places here. Some of these places were already famous.
What Makes This Place Special?
Decatur Heights is special because it tells us about important parts of history. About half of the buildings are from before 1890. Another 40 percent were built between 1890 and 1930. The rest are from after 1930.
A Look at History: Education
One reason this district is important is its link to African-American education. It shows how schools for African-American children developed in Cumberland. This area played a role in that history.
The National Road Connection
Another reason is its location along the famous National Road. The National Road was one of America's first major highways. It helped people explore and settle this region a long time ago. Being on this road made Decatur Heights an important stop.
