Dedrick is a fascinating ghost town located in Trinity County, California. A ghost town is a place that used to be a busy community but is now mostly empty. This often happens when the main reason people lived there, like a mine, closes down. Dedrick was once a lively mining settlement.
The Story of Dedrick
Dedrick was an active place for several decades. It even had its own post office. The post office served the community for 50 years, from 1891 until 1941. This shows that many people lived and worked there during that time.
The Globe Mine
One of the most important places in Dedrick was the Globe Mine. This gold mine operated for many years, from 1890 until 1918. It was known for being one of the highest mines in California, located at about 7,000 feet above sea level.
To move the mined materials, the Globe Mine used a special system. They had a two-mile-long aerial tramway. This was like a cable car system that carried heavy loads through the air. The mine also had a 20-stamp mill. A stamp mill was a machine that crushed rocks to get the valuable gold out.
In 1912, the Globe Mine was very busy. Reports from that year show that about 100 men worked there. Imagine how many people lived in Dedrick to support such a large mining operation!
A Mining Camp
By 1903, Dedrick was known as a busy mining camp. Besides the Globe Mine, another important mine called the Chloride-Bailey mine was also active. These mines brought many people to the area, hoping to find their fortune in gold.
Remembering Dedrick
Even though Dedrick is now a ghost town, its history is still remembered. In 1994, a special historical marker was put up. This marker was placed by the Leonard Morris Family and a group called E Clampus Vitus, specifically their Trinitarianus Chapter #62. Historical markers help us learn about important places and events from the past.
