The Deep River Pioneer Lutheran Church is a very old and special church located in Deep River, Washington. It was built in a style called Gothic Revival style, which looks a bit like old castles or cathedrals. This church is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This means it's recognized as a significant historical building in the United States.
The Church's Early Days
This church was the very first organized Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Deep River area. It was built by a group of Finnish settlers who came to live there. They started building the church in 1898, and it was finally finished in 1902. Imagine how much hard work went into building it over four years!
Changes Over Time
After many years, the number of people attending the church started to get smaller. Because of this, the church became inactive in the 1930s. Even though it wasn't used for regular services anymore, the inside of the church has stayed almost the same over all these years. It's like a time capsule!
In 2012, the outside of the church got a big makeover. Workers carefully removed a lot of moss that had grown on it. Then, they repainted the church's white walls and the peach-colored trim. This helped to make the historic building look fresh and cared for again.
Visiting the Church Today
Today, the Deep River Pioneer Lutheran Church is often open for people to visit. You can usually see inside during the Finnish-American Folk Festival held in Naselle. This festival celebrates the culture and history of the Finnish people who settled in the area, and the church is an important part of that history.
