Deerfield got its name from a town far away, Deerfield, Massachusetts. The first people to settle in this area arrived in 1854. They started building homes and farms here.

Over the years, the number of people living in Deerfield changed. In 1875, it was thought that about 150 people lived there. However, by 1902, the population had become much smaller, with only about 29 residents. This shows how small communities can change over time.
