Deers is a tiny, quiet place in Illinois, United States. It's called an unincorporated community because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. You can find Deers southeast of Urbana, in Champaign County. It's a really small spot, with only two houses! There's even a funny sign on a utility pole that says "Deers: Pop – Few".
The History of Deers
Deers has a bit of history, even though it's so small today. The community is named after Thomas Deer, who was an early settler in the area.
Deers' Early Post Office
A post office was opened in Deers in 1887. This was an important service for people living there. However, the post office closed its doors in 1913.
The Grain Elevator and Railroad
For many years, Deers was home to a grain elevator. This was a tall building used to store grain from local farms. The Deers elevator was built along a railroad track that ran between Urbana and Sidney. It was operated by a company called Dryer and Burt Grain and Coal in 1913.
The railroad that served Deers was once part of the Norfolk and Western Railway. But the tracks were removed in 1991, and the railroad spur was no longer used. The old grain elevator and the Deers Station depot (which was the post office) were taken down in June 2023.
