Del Mar Mesa is a neighborhood in northern San Diego, California. It is a mostly residential area, meaning people live there. The community covers about 2,042 acres, which is roughly 8.2 square kilometers. Most of the homes in Del Mar Mesa were built in the 2000s.
A big part of Del Mar Mesa is kept as open space. Over 900 acres are protected natural habitats. This area also has about 10 miles of trails. These trails are great for hiking, biking, and even horseback riding. Homes in Del Mar Mesa are built on large lots, with each property being at least half an acre.
Del Mar Mesa is part of District 1 in San Diego. A person called a Councilmember represents this district on the San Diego City Council. Their job is to help make decisions for the city.
Scientists have found old artifacts in Del Mar Mesa. These items, like pottery, might be as old as 9,000 to 10,000 years! The San Diego Archaeological Center is studying these ancient finds.
Geography of Del Mar Mesa
Del Mar Mesa is located in a great spot in San Diego. It has other communities around it. To the north, you'll find Carmel Valley and Pacific Highlands Ranch. To the south is Los Peñasquitos Canyon, a large natural area.
To the east, Del Mar Mesa borders Torrey Highlands and Rancho Peñasquitos. On the west side, it is next to Torrey Hills. A major road, State Route 56, also known as the Ted Williams Freeway, is just north of the community.
A large part of the eastern side of Del Mar Mesa is protected. This land is part of the city's Multiple Species Conservation Program. This program helps protect different types of plants and animals. You can also see groves of eucalyptus trees here. These trees were planted a long time ago, in the 1800s, around old farmhouses.

In January 2006, about 525 people lived in Del Mar Mesa. There were 227 households, which means 227 families or groups of people living together. This was a big jump from the year 2000, when only 39 people lived there.
The people living in Del Mar Mesa come from different backgrounds. About 68.7% were White, and 15.2% were Asian or Pacific Islander. About 12.0% were Hispanic. A smaller number of people were from other races, American Indian, or African American.
