The Delaware County National Bank building is a very old and important building in Chester, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. It stands at the corner of 3rd Street and Avenue of the States. This building was the main office for the Delaware County National Bank from 1884 to 1930.

It was built between 1882 and 1884. The building has two and a half stories and is made of brick and brownstone. It was designed in the Renaissance Revival style, which means it looks like buildings from the Renaissance period.

A Bank's History

The Delaware County National Bank was the very first bank in Delaware County. It was officially started by the Pennsylvania state government in 1814. This means it was given permission to operate as a bank.

In 1864, the bank became a "national bank." This meant it was now part of a system regulated by the United States government.

Building a New Home

By 1882, the bank had grown a lot. Its original building, built in 1814, was too small. The bank's leaders decided they needed a brand new building. They hired an architect named Patrick A. Welsh to design it.

The old bank building was taken down. The new, bigger Delaware County National Bank building was then built right on the same spot. While the new building was being constructed, the bank did its business in a small kitchen next to the cashier's house.

What Happened to the Building?

The Delaware County National Bank stopped using this building as its main office in 1930. Since then, the building has been used for other purposes. It has served as offices for groups like the Crozer-Chester Medical Center and the United Way.

Recognized as Historic

Because of its history and special design, the Delaware County National Bank building is considered very important. In 1987, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history and should be protected.
