Delfí Abella i Gibert

Delfí Abella i Gibert was a talented person from Catalonia, Spain. He was born on February 2, 1925, and passed away on February 1, 2007. Delfí Abella had many skills: he was a psychiatrist (a doctor who helps people with their thoughts and feelings), an essayist (someone who writes short articles or books on different topics), and a songwriter (someone who writes songs).

Who Was Delfí Abella?

Delfí Abella was a very smart and dedicated person. He spent his life helping others and creating art.

A Doctor and a Writer

As a doctor, Delfí Abella specialized in psychiatry. He worked as the head of the Psychiatry Department at a big hospital called Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona. He also taught psychiatry at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. This means he helped train new doctors in understanding the human mind. Besides his medical work, he wrote many books and essays about psychiatry and other interesting subjects.

Music and "Nova Cançó"

Delfí Abella was also a key part of a special music movement in Catalonia called Nova Cançó. This movement started in the 1960s and aimed to create new songs in the Catalan language. It was a way for artists to express themselves and their culture during a time when their language was not always encouraged.

His Songs and Influence

In 1961, Delfí Abella joined a group called Els Setze Jutges, which means "The Sixteen Judges." This group was very important in the Nova Cançó movement. He released three music recordings (called EPs) with them, featuring a total of twelve songs.

Delfí Abella was especially good at taking songs by famous French singers, like Barbara and Anne Sylvestre, and changing them into Catalan. Other younger singers from Els Setze Jutges, such as Maria del Mar Bonet and Joan Manuel Serrat, performed and recorded his Catalan versions. This helped spread the music and the Catalan language.

The group Els Setze Jutges received a special award, the Medal of Honor, from the Parliament of Catalonia in April 2007. Delfí Abella's wife accepted the award for him, as he had passed away shortly before.

What Did He Write and Record?

Delfí Abella left behind a legacy of both written works and musical recordings.
