Delfina Gómez Álvarez, born on November 15, 1962, is an important Mexican politician. She belongs to a political party called the National Regeneration Movement, often known as MORENA. Since September 2023, she has been the Governor of the State of Mexico, which is like being the leader of that state.

Before becoming governor, she held several other big jobs. She was the head of the Secretariat of Public Education, which is Mexico's main education department. She was also a senator and a federal deputy, which means she helped make laws for the country. She even served as the mayor of a city called Texcoco.

In 2023, Delfina Gómez made history. She won the election to become the Governor of the State of Mexico. She is the first woman to lead the state and the first person from a party other than the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) to hold this position in many years.

Her Early Life and Education

Delfina Gómez was born in Texcoco, a city in the State of Mexico. She started her career as a teacher in the state's education system.

In 1986, she earned her first degree in Primary Education from the National Pedagogic University. She worked hard to pay for her studies, even caring for another family's three children. Later, she continued her education, earning master's degrees in pedagogy in 1994 and in education in 2001 from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education.

Delfina Gómez was also active in the SMSEM union, which is a group for state teachers. From 1991 to 1996, she directed a private school called Columbia School. In 1998, she became an assistant deputy director for projects in the state's Secretariat of Education. A few years later, in 2002, she became a school director, showing her leadership skills in education.

Her Journey in Politics

In 2012, Delfina Gómez decided to leave her career in education and enter the world of politics. A former mayor of Texcoco, Higinio Martínez Miranda, encouraged her to run for mayor of Texcoco.

She ran as a candidate for two political parties, Movimiento Ciudadano and the Labor Party, even though she wasn't officially a member of either. She won the election and served as the mayor of Texcoco from 2013 until early 2015.

In February 2015, she stepped down as mayor to run for a new position: federal deputy. She successfully won this election as a candidate for the MORENA party. As a federal deputy, she helped create laws for the country and worked on important committees.

Running for Governor in 2017

On January 15, 2017, Delfina Gómez took a break from being a federal deputy to run for Governor of the State of Mexico. The leader of her party, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, had announced her as the candidate in July 2016. He supported her campaign by appearing at many of her events across the state.

In the 2017 gubernatorial election, Delfina Gómez ran against several other strong candidates. The election was very close. Although she did not win this election, her campaign showed her growing influence in Mexican politics.

Becoming a Senator in 2018

After the 2017 election, Delfina Gómez returned to her role as a federal deputy in October 2017. Soon after, she was named her party's state coordinator, which set her up to become a candidate for the Senate.

In February 2018, Delfina Gómez and Higinio Martínez Miranda, who had first encouraged her to enter politics, were announced as the Senate candidates for the State of Mexico. They ran as part of the Juntos Haremos Historia coalition in the 2018 election. They won the election, and Delfina Gómez became a senator. However, she did not stay in the Senate for long. She was chosen by President-elect López Obrador to join his new government.

Serving as Secretary of Education

On December 21, 2020, Delfina Gómez was nominated to become the Secretary of Public Education (SEP). This is a very important role, as it means she was in charge of all public education in Mexico.

After the previous Secretary of Education, Esteban Moctezuma, became the Mexican Ambassador to the United States, Delfina Gómez was officially appointed as Secretary of Public Education by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. She held this position until August 2022.

Winning the Governorship in 2023

On June 5, 2023, Delfina Gómez ran for governor of the State of Mexico again. This time, she won the election, defeating Alejandra del Moral Vela. Her victory was a big moment because it ended 94 years of rule by the PRI in the state.

Delfina Gómez officially took office as the Governor of the State of Mexico on September 16, 2023. She continues to serve in this important role today, leading the state and working for its people.
