A Look Back: The History of Delhi Metropark

The area where Delhi Metropark is today has a long and interesting history. It wasn't always a park!

From Mill Town to Metropark

Back in 1835, there was a sawmill right here on the Huron River. A man named Norman Gooddale bought it for $50. He then added a flour mill to the site.

In 1836, a village was planned next to the mill. It was first called Michigan Village, but soon its name changed to Delhi. Gooddale's son, Frank, made the mill even bigger. They shipped flour all the way to New England and employed about 20 people. By 1880, the Delhi Mills sent out 41,000 barrels of flour!

In 1883, Delhi was a busy little town. It had two flour mills, a woolen mill, and a sawmill. These mills got their power from a large dam on the river. Today, the exciting Delhi Rapids are what's left of that old mill dam.
