Delta Island is a small island located in the cold, icy waters of Antarctica. It is about 1 kilometre (0.5 nmi) long. This island is part of the Melchior Islands group, which is found within the larger Palmer Archipelago.
Delta Island lies very close to Lambda Island to its southeast. It is also situated to the east of Alpha Island. These islands are all part of a fascinating and remote region of the world.
What's in a Name?
The name "Delta Island" comes from the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet, which is Delta (Δ). It's thought that explorers from the Discovery Investigations gave it this name. They were the first to roughly map the island in 1927.
Exploring Delta Island
Even though it's a small and remote island, Delta Island has been explored and mapped several times. Argentine expeditions visited the island to survey it. These important surveys took place in 1942, 1943, and again in 1948. These expeditions helped us learn more about this part of Antarctica.
