Demico Boothe spent almost 13 years in federal prison. He was released in 2003. While he was in prison, he wrote his first book. It was called Why Are So Many Black Men in Prison? Since then, he has written three more books. These include Getting Out & Staying Out: A Black Man's Guide to Success After Prison. Another book is The Top 25 Things Black Folks Do That We Need To Stop!!! This book came out in 2009. It was very well-liked in the African-American community.
Early Life
Demico Boothe was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He grew up in two different homes. Part of his childhood was spent with his mother. They lived in the Castalia Heights Projects in South Memphis. He also spent time at his father's home. This area of Memphis changed a lot during his teenage years.
His Work and Ideas
Demico Boothe is an expert on many topics. These topics are important to the African-American community. He especially focuses on the U.S. justice system. This system includes laws, courts, and prisons.
Boothe talks about fairness in the legal and prison systems. He also strongly believes in education. He thinks learning should continue throughout life. For example, he noticed that many black men he met in prison had not received much education.
On the back of his book, Why Are So Many Black Men in Prison?, Boothe shares something amazing. He says that while he was in prison, he read and studied over 500 books. This included the entire Webster's Dictionary. He also read the Bible and the Qur'an. He even read every entry in the 1998 Encyclopædia Britannica.
Boothe also teaches how to avoid problems that can lead to prison. He calls this avoiding the "school to prison pipeline." In his 2012 book, Getting Out and Staying Out, he gives advice. He suggests taking full control of your actions. This is important even if you feel treated unfairly. Other ideas include reading a lot while in prison.
