Demond Meeks is an American politician and a union organizer. He currently serves in the New York State Assembly, representing the 137th district. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Mr. Meeks made history as the second African American person to represent Monroe County in the Assembly. His predecessor, David Gantt, was the first.
His Early Career and Education
Demond Meeks studied at Monroe Community College. He then went on to graduate from SUNY-Brockport. After finishing his education, Mr. Meeks started working as a labor organizer. A labor organizer helps workers come together to form a union. Unions work to improve things like pay, benefits, and working conditions for employees.
Mr. Meeks serves as an administrative organizer for 1199SEIU. This is a large union that represents healthcare workers. He is also an active member of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists. This group supports Black workers and their unions. He has also received special training and certifications related to labor from Cornell University.
Serving in the New York State Assembly
The New York State Assembly is part of the state government. Its members help create and vote on laws for New York State. In 2020, the Assemblyman for the 137th district, David Gantt, announced he would not run for re-election.
Demond Meeks decided to run for the open seat. He won the primary election for the Democratic Party against other candidates. A primary election helps a political party choose its main candidate. Mr. Meeks did not face any opponents in the main election that year.
Because Assemblyman Gantt had passed away, the seat became empty. Demond Meeks was sworn into office early on November 12, 2020. He has been serving the people of the 137th district ever since.
