Demond Meeks is an American politician and a union organizer. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Currently, he works in the New York State Assembly. This is like a big group of lawmakers for New York State. He represents the 137th district. Mr. Meeks is the second African American person to represent Monroe County in the Assembly. The first was David Gantt, who was there before him.
Early Life and Career
After finishing his studies, Demond Meeks started working as a labor organizer. He went to Monroe Community College and SUNY-Brockport. A labor organizer helps workers come together to improve their jobs. This includes things like better pay or safer working conditions.
Mr. Meeks works for a group called 1199SEIU. This group helps healthcare workers. He is also an active member of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists. This group supports Black workers in unions. He also received special training from Cornell University about labor topics.
Serving in the New York State Assembly
In 2020, the Assemblyman for the 137th district, David Gantt, decided not to run again. Demond Meeks then announced he would run for the seat. He won the primary election for the Democratic Party. A primary election is when people from the same party vote for who they want to represent them.
Mr. Meeks ran against two other candidates and a county legislator named Ernest Flagler. He won the primary election. In the main election, called the general election, he did not have any opponents. This meant he automatically won the seat.
Assemblyman Gantt passed away during the summer. This left the seat empty. So, Demond Meeks was sworn into office early. He officially started his job on November 12, 2020.
