About Denardo Coleman

Early Life and Music

Denardo Coleman was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1956. He started playing the drums when he was just six years old. When he was 10, he joined his father's band.

His first time playing on a record was in 1966. This was on his father's album called The Empty Foxhole. Charlie Haden, who played bass on the album, was very impressed. He said Denardo's drumming would "startle every drummer who hears him."

Playing with His Parents

Denardo continued to play drums on his father's albums. These included Ornette at 12 (1968) and Crisis (1969). He was also part of his father's band, Prime Time, in the 1970s.

He also played with his mother, Jayne Cortez, in her band called The Firespitters. Denardo has worked with many other great musicians too. Some of these include Geri Allen, Pat Metheny, James Blood Ulmer, and Jamaaladeen Tacuma.

Manager and Producer

In the 1980s, Denardo took on a new role. He started to manage his father's music career. He continued doing this important job for 30 years.

Denardo is also a skilled music producer. He has produced albums for both of his parents. He also produced albums like In All Languages and Virgin Beauty in the 1980s. In the 1990s, he produced Hidden Man and Three Women.

In 2017, Denardo started a new record label called Song X Records. This name was inspired by one of his father's favorite songs, "Song X". On this label, he produced Celebrate Ornette. This was a special tribute to his father. It came as a big box set with DVDs, CDs, and vinyl records.
