Denardo Ornette Coleman (born April 19, 1956) is an American jazz drummer. He is known for his unique drumming style. Denardo is the son of two famous artists, Ornette Coleman and Jayne Cortez.

Who is Denardo Coleman?

Denardo Coleman was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1956. He started playing the drums when he was just six years old. His parents were both very talented musicians. His father, Ornette Coleman, was a famous jazz saxophonist. His mother, Jayne Cortez, was a well-known poet and performer.

Early Musical Journey

When Denardo was only 10 years old, he joined his father's band. This was a big step for such a young musician! He played drums on his father's 1966 album, The Empty Foxhole. Another musician on that album, Charlie Haden, was very impressed. He said Denardo's drumming would "startle every drummer who hears him." This shows how talented Denardo was, even at a young age.

Playing with His Father's Bands

Denardo continued to play with his father, Ornette Coleman. He appeared on other albums like Ornette at 12 (1968) and Crisis (1969). In the 1970s, he became a member of Ornette's band called Prime Time. This band was known for its special sound, which mixed jazz with other styles.

Working with Other Artists

Denardo didn't just play with his father. He also worked with his mother, Jayne Cortez, in a band called The Firespitters. He has played drums for many other famous musicians too. Some of these include Geri Allen, Pat Metheny, James Blood Ulmer, and Jamaaladeen Tacuma.

Beyond Playing: Managing and Producing

In the 1980s, Denardo took on a new role. He started to manage his father's music career. He did this for over 30 years, helping Ornette Coleman with his shows and recordings. Denardo also became a successful music producer. He helped create albums for both his parents. He also produced albums like In All Languages and Virgin Beauty in the 1980s. Later, he produced Hidden Man and Three Women in the 1990s.

In 2017, Denardo started his own record label called Song X Records. He released a special tribute to his father called Celebrate Ornette. This collection included DVDs, CDs, and vinyl records of his father's performances. It was a wonderful way to honor his father's musical legacy.
