Denis Vieru (born March 10, 1996) is a talented judoka from Moldova. He competes in the men's half-lightweight category, which is for athletes weighing around 66 kilograms. Denis has represented his country in many big competitions. He won a bronze medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. This was in the men's 66 kg event. He also competed in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

Denis Vieru's Judo Journey

Denis Vieru first became well-known when he won a gold medal. This was at the 2016 European U23 Judo Championships. He was the first Moldovan to win this title since 2005. In 2019, Denis won several medals at important IJF events.

Winning Gold Medals

  • He won Moldova's first ever Judo Grand Prix gold medal. This was at the 2019 Judo Grand Prix Antalya.
  • He also won gold at the 2019 Judo Grand Slam Baku.
  • Denis defeated a famous champion, Vazha Margvelashvili, to win gold. This happened at the 2019 Judo Grand Slam Paris.
  • He won another gold medal at the 2019 Summer Universiade in Naples. He even carried the flag for Moldova at the opening ceremony!
  • Later in 2019, he earned a bronze medal at the 2019 World Judo Championships.

Overcoming Challenges

For a short time, Denis Vieru's medals and points were put on hold. This was while some checks were done. However, it was proven that he had done nothing wrong. He received a short break from competing. After this, he was able to keep all his medals and his high world ranking.
