Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Denis de Sallo, Sieur de la Coudraye (1626 – May 14, 1669) was a French writer and lawyer from Paris. He is famous for starting the Journal des sçavans. This was the very first literary and scientific magazine in France and all of Europe! It later changed its name to Journal des savants.

A Life of Learning

Denis de Sallo received a good education in classic subjects. In 1652, he became a lawyer in Paris. However, he was more interested in studying law than practicing it in court. He also worked as an advisor for the French government.

De Sallo was connected to Jean-Baptiste Colbert, who was an important finance minister for King Louis XIV. He also knew many other smart people across Europe.

In 1660, de Sallo traveled to Italy. He visited cities like Rome and Florence, where he met many Italian scholars and thinkers.

Starting the First Magazine

In 1665, Denis de Sallo published the first issue of his famous magazine, the Journal des sçavans. He used a secret name, Sieur d'Hédouville, for this. The idea for the magazine was to share new information.

The Journal included many interesting things. It reported on news and new inventions in science and art. It also shared decisions from courts and reviewed new scholarly books. This made it very useful for thinkers and scholars of that time.

De Sallo had special permission from the court to publish his magazine for twenty years. His secret name came from a small village called Hédouville.

The Journal stopped publishing after its thirteenth issue. This happened because de Sallo did not get approval for everything he published. It was also likely because some important writers did not like their works being criticized in the magazine.

However, the Journal started again soon after. This time, de Sallo's assistant, Jean Gallois, became the editor.

Later Years and Death

In his last years, Denis de Sallo's health became very poor. He was unable to walk because of a serious illness. He passed away in Paris in the summer of 1669.
